β-Glucosidase
Support cellulose saccharification by converting cellobiose to glucose, or investigate selected β-glucosides for flavour and natural-product processing.
01 / Understand the chemistry
How does β-glucosidase work?
β-Glucosidases hydrolyse suitable β-D-glucosides. Cellobiose hydrolysis releases two glucose molecules and can relieve cellobiose inhibition of upstream cellulases. Activity on aryl glucosides, cellobiose and other natural substrates varies between individual proteins.

How to measure β-glucosidase activity
A p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside assay gives a convenient chromogenic readout. Confirm relevant performance using cellobiose and a glucose-specific or chromatographic method.
Make a better selection
What matters when choosing a grade?
Strong activity on a chromogenic substrate does not guarantee strong cellobiase activity. Glucose inhibition and stability can matter more than the highest initial assay value.
Confirm source, grade, activity method, formulation, storage and compatibility. Use stability data for the selected preparation; an optimum measured for one protein does not define every product’s operating window.
From screening to production
Plan a useful β-glucosidase trial
Set a matched control
Use your actual material. Keep pH, temperature, residence time and mixing identical in the untreated control, so physical processing effects are separated from enzyme action.
Screen dose and time
Compare a dose ladder and take a time course. State activity units and their assay definition, and express dose against a clear feedstock or process basis.
Validate the endpoint
Measure glucose and cellobiose separately over time. Assess retained activity, downstream quality and cost per useful outcome before increasing scale.

β-Glucosidase: common selection questions
What does β-glucosidase produce?
β-Glucosidases hydrolyse suitable β-D-glucosides. Cellobiose hydrolysis releases two glucose molecules and can relieve cellobiose inhibition of upstream cellulases. Activity on aryl glucosides, cellobiose and other natural substrates varies between individual proteins.
How do I test β-glucosidase for my process?
A p-nitrophenyl-β-D-glucopyranoside assay gives a convenient chromogenic readout. Confirm relevant performance using cellobiose and a glucose-specific or chromatographic method.
What should I check before buying β-glucosidase?
Strong activity on a chromogenic substrate does not guarantee strong cellobiase activity. Glucose inhibition and stability can matter more than the highest initial assay value.
