Xylanase
Target xylan-rich materials in biomass, baking and pulp processing, with enzyme choice guided by substrate substitution and the desired material outcome.
01 / Understand the chemistry
How does xylanase work?
Endo-xylanases cleave the xylan backbone. Xylans vary in arabinose, acetyl and other substituents, which affect access and enzyme performance. Backbone cleavage usually produces oligosaccharides rather than complete conversion to xylose.

How to measure xylanase activity
Xylan-based reducing-sugar assays provide an activity readout, but xylan source and solubility matter. Use chromatography when the balance between xylose and oligosaccharides is important.
Make a better selection
What matters when choosing a grade?
A result on purified soluble xylan may not predict performance in lignified material. Distinguish the effect of backbone cleavage from side-chain removal.
Confirm source, grade, activity method, formulation, storage and compatibility. Use stability data for the selected preparation; an optimum measured for one protein does not define every product’s operating window.
From screening to production
Plan a useful xylanase trial
Set a matched control
Use your actual material. Keep pH, temperature, residence time and mixing identical in the untreated control, so physical processing effects are separated from enzyme action.
Screen dose and time
Compare a dose ladder and take a time course. State activity units and their assay definition, and express dose against a clear feedstock or process basis.
Validate the endpoint
Measure xylose, oligosaccharides and overall conversion. Assess retained activity, downstream quality and cost per useful outcome before increasing scale.

Xylanase: common selection questions
What does xylanase produce?
Endo-xylanases cleave the xylan backbone. Xylans vary in arabinose, acetyl and other substituents, which affect access and enzyme performance. Backbone cleavage usually produces oligosaccharides rather than complete conversion to xylose.
How do I test xylanase for my process?
Xylan-based reducing-sugar assays provide an activity readout, but xylan source and solubility matter. Use chromatography when the balance between xylose and oligosaccharides is important.
What should I check before buying xylanase?
A result on purified soluble xylan may not predict performance in lignified material. Distinguish the effect of backbone cleavage from side-chain removal. Share your feedstock, operating conditions, target outcome and required documentation when requesting a grade recommendation.
